Overview

The Peer Educator helps to provide up-to-date HIV information for individuals living with HIV and had a desire to share their knowledge with others.

Responsibilities

  • Supports adherence for health care appointments.
  • Function as an extension of the adherence nurse/health educator and health care provider to support adherence with ongoing care and medications.
  • Provide education opportunities for the rural clinics where it is difficult for others to travel to other educational opportunity venues.
  • Provide insight about living with HIV that supports the knowledge of the health care providers.
  • Document interactions with the patients and use the Change Theory approach to support healthier lifestyle behaviors.
  • Spend an entire day at each clinic.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma. Must successfully pass the 5 week peer training with a 70% on the Post test, give a 10 minute presentation on a selected topic, and participate in 1 Peer Educator update each year.  Peer coaches have received advanced training to include: HIPAA, boundaries, disclosure, see occupational health etc.
