Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. Our Norfolk, VA office is actively searching for a Structural Engineer with design experience of waterfront infrastructure, buildings, or large facilities who has an interest in learning and developing expertise in structural waterfront design. Our firm is engaged with the Navy's Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) to modernize the Navy's public shipyards for effective and timely repair of submarines and aircraft carriers. As the successful new hire, you will learn from highly accomplished engineers to design and plan for waterfront structures projects. Waterfront projects can be highly complex with heavy loads and forces. Our projects will challenge your engineering skills! Projects you will work on may include: dry docks, ports, terminals, large and small marinas, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads, breakwater and shore protection structures. The ideal candidate will have structural analysis, modeling experience and interest in learning as no two sites are the same at the waterfront!

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform as design engineer and/or design manager on waterfront projects
  • Analysis, design, inspection of waterfront structures, quality control/assurance, and post construction award services (PCAS)
  • Structural analysis and design with timber, steel, concrete and composite materials
  • Prestressed concrete analysis and design
  • Develop plans, specifications, and inspection reports as needed
  • Perform Quality Assurance reviews of drawings, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates
  • Help resolve design problems that may include performing field investigations or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
  • Calculate construction quantity estimates
  • Work closely with other architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
  • Office construction administration including review of shop drawings and technical submittals
  • Perform/provide site investigations, construction site inspections, construction support, and prepare inspection reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or related) and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer licensure in the State of Virginia or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire
  • 4 to 6 years of structural design experience. Design experience related to: marine/waterfront structures, buildings, heavy civil/geotechnical, or large facilities is required
    • Preferred experience using:
      • SAP2000 or STAAD
      • LPile
      • AutoCAD or Revit
  • Ability and willingness to perform occasional site visits which are anticipated to be 1 to 2 times per month
  • Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients
  • Due to client parameters, selected candidate must show (post offer) proof of U.S. citizenship and clear results of a thorough background check that may include but is not limited to credit and criminal history
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Some travel required to work with other offices as part of large project teams or to project site in different locations than the candidate's assigned office.
