Safety Inspector

Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Safety Inspector to oversee safety operations in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
  • Conducts vessel, building and grounds inspections on a periodic and regular basis to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures.
  • Documents results of inspections via daily EHS reports.
  • Performs administrative and record-keeping functions in support of the safety organization for the company.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations as applied by the company's safety manual and regulatory oversight.
  • Observes crews at work and assists in resolving noncompliance.
  • Ensuring workers are provided with suitable protective equipment, such as eye goggles, ear protectors or appropriate types of gloves and clothing at worksites.
  • Inspects equipment, tools, and working conditions & facilitate removal of items not meeting safety requirements to ensure safety of workers.
  • Investigates incidents to determine root causes and devises preventive measures through completing detailed paperwork.
  • Keeping up to date with new legislation and health and safety standards
  • Providing training and educational support to employers and new/trainee employees
  • May instruct workers in the use of safety equipment and safe work methods.
  • Understand and act upon instruction.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator.
  • Maintain a professional disposition by setting a positive example for safe work practices/behaviors.
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must have OSHA 521 (OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene).
  • Must have OSHA 2225 (Respiratory Protection).
  • Must have OSHA 3115 (Fall Protection).
  • Must have OSHA 3095 (Electrical Standards).
  • Must have demonstrable knowledge of Federal safety regulations and job safety analysis required.
  • Must have experience with behavior-based safety processes.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years industrial operations experience.
  • Must have HAZMAT, CPR, and first aid training.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner.
  • Must have effective interpersonal skills dealing with people at various levels and in a variety of functions.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Must have reliable transportation, maintain a current valid driver's license with a record that allows the operation of company vehicles.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Prefer a Shipyard Competent Person.
  • Prefer maritime trade experience.
  • Prefer knowledge of maritime rules and regulations: OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI, EPA and State and Local regulations.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
  • General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time.
  • Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Hear, talk, and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
  • A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
