About the Job:

  1. Drives Environmental Sustainability Performance: Manages environmental sustainability as a strategic and operational issue across functions, geographies and business segments to drive growth, differentiate Vulcan from others in the construction materials industry, maintain our social license to operate, earn support for expansion and greenfield initiatives and fulfill the reporting requirements of customer, supplier, governmental and non-governmental entities.
  2. Carries out Sustainability Program Management and Reporting: Tracks stakeholder expectations, drives enterprise-wide target and goal setting, develops strategies to address requirements, and manages reporting to various entities.

What You'll Do:

  • Directs an enterprise-wide "One Vulcan, Locally Led" approach to embedding environmental sustainability into the strategic disciplines (VWS, VWO) and other business functions.
  • Develops awareness and functional literacy around environmental sustainability expectations and best practices. Partners with operational support, customer excellence and functional leaders in driving environmental sustainability knowledge and practices into culture, business strategy and daily operations.
  • Facilitates alignment and ensures coordination and consistent communication on environmental sustainability strategies, tactics and performance enterprise-wide. Advises functions and divisions in developing risk-based, locally appropriate environmental sustainability strategies and executing against those strategies to produce reportable results.
  • Partners with operational support, customer excellence and functional leaders to develop toolkits of highly-flexible, locally adaptable strategies and tactics to attain goals, targets and KPIs.
  • Provides enterprise leadership on environmental sustainability issues (energy procurement and management, greenhouse gas emissions, air emissions other than GHG emissions, water resource management, land and biodiversity management, and product sustainability, cross-topical initiatives (e.g. intersection of climate and biodiversity) emerging trends, standards, best practices, governance, reporting and measurement.
  • Convenes and leads committees and working groups and facilitates conversations to surface opportunities and lead to decisions regarding environmental sustainability policy, program and performance.
  • Leads processes to update environmental and social materiality assessments, goals and targets. Directs reporting and stakeholder outreach. Ensures Vulcan's ratings and rankings with major third-party organizations, such as CDP, ISS, MSCI, S&P, Sustainalytics and Ecovadis reflect correct and complete information and are making progress toward targets.
  • Coordinates development of internal policies related to ESG that are supportive of both business (financial) and non-financial goals.
  • Hires and directs consulting resources to assist with program implementation.

Qualifications

What We're Looking For:

The successful candidate will have experience in directing and supporting aggregates operations. The role is responsible for establishing standards and systems to enable the business to meet its strategic goals for environmental sustainability. This is a highly visible role working closely with key business and functional leaders across the entire footprint at both corporate and division levels requiring:

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, and influencing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with stakeholders of multiple levels within the company. Ability to build relationships with team members that transcend a project.
  • Excellence in development and delivery of presentations for lay audiences, with ability to distill and effectively communicate highly complex information to leaders across operations, sales and functional support teams.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams. Demonstrated ability to lead ad hoc teams and exert influence absent formal organizational structures.
  • Ability to create a well-defined project plan, capturing business requirements and project scope, while sequencing activities and resources.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and reporting frameworks.
  • Aggregates industry knowledge, particularly as relates to operations/production to products and their uses.
  • Creative approach to identifying opportunities and solving problems in ways that generate profit and growth as well as meet sustainability objectives.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% of time.
  • 10-15 years related experience.
